Garden house - the client had a number of prioriti Garden house - the client had a number of priorities, including aging in place, climate resilience, flexible compact living spaces, and a quiet street presence. As avid gardeners - instead of the house opening onto the garden, they conceptualized the working garden opening into the house. 🌼 🍃

This material palette is for a client moving into a new office space who wanted a lighter feel while reusing their existing burgundy and mahogany furniture. Because we were on a short timeline, we used in-stock options, including recycled content where available. The result is a fresh update that is good for the budget and the planet.

This early concept sketch of an ocean-facing home shows how the main body of the house can be connected to the garage with a breezeway. This creates a sense of entrance to the home and is an ideal mudroom.

With close adjacency to two frequently used rooms, it offers convenient storage out of sight. The sink does triple duty as a secondary kitchen sink, laundry sink, and washroom sink. Pocket doors keep walking paths clear.

The branches of the maple outside speak to the location in the year. The West-facing dormer offers a daily sunset view. This space is also a good example of an efficiency trick - a widened hallway carves out just enough space for a shared office within the “public” space.
